Where to buy pure breeds in Kent

Post by Greenhorn »

Given that I shall probably get some more girls - after the disaster of 10.05.19 when the fox got six of mine - is anyone able to recommend places to go where I can get friendly pure breeds who like to be handled? Not sure if this is allowed on this site, so forgive me if I am not supposed to ask for recommendations. We got outrLegbars and Welsummers from a small back-garden breeder almost seven years ago and I do not think they are operating any more. The Welsummers were lovely friendsly girls, so I may like to get one or two more, but would be interested in other breeds as well. I like to be able to handle them. The Legbars would never let us get near them and it was a nightmare trying to catch them. The same question applies to the bantams regarding friendliness - but I know nothing at all about them, so perhaps all bantams are friendly and maybe pure breeds are not needed for these.

We are in South Kent.

Thank you all.

The Rhode Island Red hybrids as not as flighty as Legbars. Never wanted to cuddle mine, but they certainly would sit on top of the house to watch you cleaning it out. And they lay very well (for the first couple of years at least) I liked my Black Rocks (RIRx Plymouth Rock)

I can't help with a recomendation as I'm not in Kent, but as far as breeds go, legbars are very flighty, nervous and not always terribly friendly - my Dory Grey is a cream legbar, inquisitive and mad as a hatter but startles easily and terrible to pick up, but she does let me hand feed her treats and deigns to get up on my knee occasionally. A lot might depend on the individual bird's personality and how socialised they are at the breeder/supplier. I also found my Black Star Rembrandt an awfully friendly girl, very sociable and good in a flock. As Mo says, the warren/isa brown/lohmans/rangers and columbian blacktails are very friendly and easy flock members (there's a reason why they are often the breeds used in commercial egg farms) and my Golden Speckeldy Pokey is also a very friendly and socaible girl. I suspect a normal Speckeldy would be the same, as I think Amber Stars, Bluebells and Light Sussex are - if you were looking for differnet breeds. Some of these are hybrids, not pure breeds.

I don't know so much about bantams, never had them. What about silkies, pekins and brahma bantams?

I don't know if this page is up to date, but there's a list of breeders in Kent here: http://www.downthelane.net/chicken-breeders-uk/kent.php
