Our home made house and run

Image

The run is approx 5m x 1m (16ft x 3ft) but not tall enough to stand up in (just less than 5ft maybe). Will add more pictures of the house when I can.

Lynne's Canadian Coop

Post by LynneP »

This coop is built inside a typical red barn, from a former horse stall. Our major concerns are predation and winter. So the run is roofed, and caged in 1/2" hardware cloth, some of it buried as a flange to keep diggers out. We're talking foxes, coyotes, bears, cougars, bobcats, feral cats, raccoons, eagles, hawks, owls, pine martens, weasels, mink and various other carnivores. The coop is also insulated with fibreglass, and the batts are vapor-sealed on te warm side and tuck-taped to exclude insects and mice. In winter we put up thin snow boards made of 1/4" plywood to keep drifts out.

There are platforms indoors and out to keep the birds dry and to give the coop and run more interest and places where the hens do not come beak to beak if they do not wish!

In recent years our summers have been very hot, sometimes humid and we get periods of alternating sun and rain. Temps from 17-32C are typical. In winter we are in a snow belt and we can get temps in January and February dipping to -25C, occasionally for extended periods. Water heaters are necessary and we supplement light for a few hours in the mornings when the days get short.

A colony of feral cats uses the barn but the individuals never come into contact with the hens.
Hope is the thing with feathers that perches in the soul - and sings the tunes without the words - and never stops at all.

Here is the run we have built for our three girls which adjoins the shed that they can enter through a pophole They also have a 6ft x 4 ft area inside the shed. The end is separated off for some of our quail. As our garden is narrow I couldn't get it all in but the roof is covered with corrugated plastic to keep the rain and foxes out.

Some progress

Post by Stef »

Here's how we started.

Image
The Monochrome Set

3 chickens in a Garden Loft, 2m x 1m "Enough for 4 chickens"
Image
garden-loft

Then we just let them out for a while
Image
Image0005

But we got scared they'd do a runner. So we put up a little bit of a fence
Image
dust bathing

But we weren't convinced cos their heads were at the same height as the top of the fence. So we had a re-think with some safety tape - no crime scene, honest!

They like it, I think!

Well, they seem to like flattening hills

Duck Dabbling

Cos it didn't last long

20 minutes later and no hill

So now we are pricing up the electric fence options. I really can't stand the thought of that tape staying in place - I keep looking over my shoulder for a UK H, Mac, Grissom etc to come up the garden path!

This is my coop and run - the photos were taken before the chickens arrived - we now have a ladder up to the pop hole, aubiose on the run floor and a tarp over the roof of the run. Initially we let them out round the side of the house where the coop is, now they are using the whole garden :-D

We used to foster dogs so these were our old kennels - able to convert quite easily and now house 3 pekins, 2 buff orpingtons and a 'mystery bird' !
Awaiting the arrival of lots more chickens - just waiting for them to be sexed )t'

Hope you like it ?

Finally

It's up

They have all had to experience the 'bump', but only once. Now they show the fence a healthy respect!

So, almost done. Just some winterising to do and hopefully they'll be happy chucklets for ever!
