They're destroying my garden!!

I have received aquired two chickens, Mary and Lily. I have only actually had them about a week now and I am already really attached to them and am having fun watching their personalities develop.

I keep them in a coop during the day where they have an outside run and access to a nice cosy shed. However, when I get in from work I have been giving them the run of the garden. They have taken to wrecking my plants with their scratching and my lawn is slowly dissapearing around the edges as they are just constantly scraping away at it. I love my chickens but also love my garden, I know it is only natural for them to do this but can anybody offer me any advice on how to prevent this? Can you train chickens?!? Is it absolutely essential that they need to get out of their coop daily? (The coop has a patioed floor)..

Any advice would be much appreciated!
