Noise when laying

Post by TassieDev »

ok time for a real newbie question
Hens make that "bukkak!" noise when laying an egg right?
I just assumed but wasn't sure!
Do they normally just do it once or many times?
If they are eggbound or something and trying unsuccessfully to lay would they make the noise then or not?

Thanks!
:)

They also make a noise for other reasons, or no apparent reason.
E.G when they've just jumped over the fence.
Some don't make much noise at all, and according to this forum, some make too much noise for neighbourly harmony.

It's a little of the some and some one this.

They tend to lay an egg, then hang around the area for s short while making that noise. This often sets a couple of others off and there's a right din for about 5 - 10 minutes.
It's probably the same one's who do it.

A slightly similar noise is made if there's something about, like a fox, a cat or some other creature / sound they're not sure of. But you can determine the difference in the calls.

I wouldn't think it's different if it's a chicken who's not so well. Usually sick chickens are very quiet and just sit around in a rather lethargic manner.

Others may have some variations of this.

ok thanks, good to know!
she does quieter little noises quite a lot, but today it was a really loud BUKAAK BUKAAK quite a few times. by the time i got outside it was all quiet and she just came running up for food :)
she's the only chicken at the moment, so wouldn't have been 'egged on'

They do make little squeeky noises quite a lot.

It's my theory, the same as kids, if they're noisy - they're OK !!!!
