Reading through it made me realise just how lucky I have been to get 5 girls and only 2 boys from the eggs hatched by my silkies. I loved the whole experience but won't hatch eggs again as found rehoming the boys hard - really wanted to keep them. I may get day old chicks sometime though.
The thing that I found hard and you don't realise til you keep hens is the losses that happen through various reasons, makes you toughen up a bit I have found.
It will be alright in the end , if its not alright, it isn't the end .

Egg number 7 today )c(
Although it was a teeny bit lighter when I got home (probably due to snow) the ladies were in bed, all squashed up together in the nest box. My Sussex cross, known as Mrs White Lady is always in first, and you can ell as she is very dirty where everyone sits on top of her.
Nothing else to report.

I am leaving my chookies for 2 weeks and the weather appalling. They have lots and lots of lovely warm straw. My neighbour is taking care of them and I am sure they will be fine, but I can't stop worrying about them.

Arrived back from hols Sunday morning, all the girls and the little guy are fine. Coup was very smelly, hubby gave it a good clean Wednesday.
Chicken sitting neighbour said there had been 8 eggs whilst we had been away, half of them broken, they were from one of my ex bat girls, i thought they had given up laying (those hard worked little girls just keep on laying, bless them) There was a lovely warm fresh egg waiting for me, and a further 2 since, so that's 17 eggs this year.
Little silkie is moulting so I guess that is why she has stopped laying.
The daylight hours are increasing and since I got back from my hols, my little girls are still out and about when I get home from work, which is nice to see, and I am able to let them out before I go to work each morning )t'

The ladies have been allowed to free range for the past 6 weeks or so, but yesterday we were informed that one of the ex bat ladies had escaped the garden and taken herself off down the street (this was previously a problem). So today they have been confined to barracks. But when I arrived home a naughty ex bat lady was out free ranging in the garden, she is like Houdini, naughty girl. So this weekend further attempts will have to be made to stop this behaviour.

Did she have a basket on her arm and a shopping list? Maybe she was paying calls in the manner of Victorian lady
