Also interesting to read about your losses, as I read up on chicken keeping I started to think about the fact that actually they are relatively fragile. One of my son's friends who is 13 had to wring the neck of one of his chickens as he was the only one at home and the bird was in distress. I started to realise that if I loved my birds and am commited to them, part of that means clearing up the mess if a fox comes or perhaps even putting them out of their misery....and remembering that as much as I love them and they bring me so much joy, I have to hold them lightly...thanks for sharing your story and I hope that you have many happy healthy birds in the future..

Bev I use mud with stepping stones for me. The earth used to be dry enough to dustbathe in until the floods!

Whilst it's been so cold, I've been giving the girls a bedtime treat of warm pellets, corn and mealworms.

They do seem to enjoy it, here they are eating, or rather inhaling their supper.....


You know that funny little noise they make when they're eating, like as if they've never had food ever before

They look so cosy in there with the straw, i love seeing chicken bums they are so cute and fluffy stuck out while they eat

They certainly don't hold back Sandy, no, little munchkins aren't they!

We seem to be managing okay in the snow so far, I've been putting lots of extra fresh Aubiose in their eglooop to keep them nice and cosy.

Little Betty is such a friendly little hen, she's always by my side or in the egloop 'helping' me poop pick and such

Despite the very cold temperatures and snow, we seem to be managing okay - or rather the girls are, I still mange to slide my way down the garden!

Our Hilda isn't looking herself today, but I think she's having me on because as soon as I rattled the mealworm tin, she came running and assisted Nita and Betty in gobbling everything up!

Nevertheless, will keep very close inspection on her.....

Luckily I can see the run from the back of the house - upstairs bathroom, our bedroom, Hubbly's study, kitchen, so I can do lots of observations.
