I'm off to collect some more eggs now. Orpington bantams, 3 probably frizzle ones,
and 4 that will be gold laced or blue laced. That's all I can fit into the incy- probably
a good job too! The incy is warming up, they'll go in in the morning & >fi<
next week I shall be able to post a photo of something growing in them. )app(

This morning I popped the eggs into the incy. Then...Nettle my tiny pekin bantam
went broody! I've decided to let her sit on half the eggs & watch the others develop
in the incubator till near the end, then give them to her. I've set up a broody run & put her in there on some plastic eggs tonight & if she's still sitting firmly in the morning
she can have the eggs!
I hated leaving her there on her own on such a cold night, she's such a tiny little dot. Her best friend & soul mate Orpy (they even lay their eggs in the same nest at the same time) was whining when I shut the coops up tonight, poor Orpy, she'll have to pal
up with someone else for a few weeks.

I decided to make Nettle a new broody run inside the main Walk-in-Run which is
sheltered & more cosy. While she was running round the garden all puffed up, squawking & doing the broody bock-bock I carefully transferred her nest, took out the plastic egg and put in a couple of real but infertile eggs in there. I put her in, but 5 mins later she was running up & down the run wanting to get out! when I gave up & let her out she rushed straight to the regular nestbox where I'd put the plastic egg...
and settled down happily on it, squawking at anyone who came near! Dear funny little Nettle, I've put the precious plastic egg back in her own nest & she's now sitting firmly. This evening I shall start to slip her the "special" ones.

I should change this thread to "the adventures of plastic egg"! I took said egg away
from Nettle last night as I was afraid she may find it hard to cover them all properly.
Maybe she left a broody smell on it or something, this morning Smidge the cockerel found it & started cooing over it, I watched him tidy the straw around it, roll it into
the middle then call the other girls in to see! it was so funny.
Later little Nettle left her nest to stretch her legs & 1/2 hour later I found her, having
abandoned her lovely real eggs in favour of...yes, the plastic one! So I've had to give
it back to her. I think I should name it Eggbert & when the others hatch we'll draw
a face on it so it doesn't feel left out.
Now to the serious stuff. I candled the 3 incy eggs this evening, there's real life
in the 2 frizzles, still a ? over the other. I'll do it again in a few days.
This is a frizzle one - its hard to make out at first, its a bit feint, there's a sort of
spider shape in the middle, that's where the chick is forming & the network of veins
around it.

I tried to take a photo of the latest development, but the tiny thing in there was
wriggling around like mad so its a bit blurred

Image
yesterday I managed to candle Nettles eggs, she is very obliging, just let me reach in
and take them! of the 4 one was undeveloped so I took it away, one was wriggling
like mad & the other two looked developed but darker & not wriggling, so maybe
they haven't survived the cold. In hindsight perhaps I should have kept Nettle indoors
during the really cold weather, she's so tiny she may have struggled to keep them
warm enough, but maybe I'm wrong & they're ok I'll check again in a few days.
Eggbert had to leave the nest! he was taking up precious warm space.
Now my beautiful huge brahma Beany has gone broody, what a shame I didn't
wait a bit longer, Beany is big & fluffy enough to hatch tons of eggs. hmm maybe
next year!

I candled the eggs again tonight, oh my! those little chickies are growing so
fast. They are all moving about, even the ones I thought I'd lost. I thought the
ones under Nettle were moving more slowly than the ones in the incubator,
perhaps mother hen has a calming influence on them - or perhaps they were
asleep before I disturbed them.
I've decided I may let big Beany hatch some of them too, I'm sure she'd be
a lovely mum, it may be a bit fiddly with separate runs for a while.
and Beany will need to get used to a bit more hard work & less lounging about!

I have loved reading your hatching diary (shame about the faverolles bantam eggs though {cry} )
I bet you can't wait until they're due to hatch (I know I cant!!)

Beany looks like quite a character, what breed is she? She looks huge!

Beany is a large Brahma, I think her colouring is blue Columbian buff, I know she's
quite a rare colour but I was given her for next to nothing as she had a wound from
a ratbite. She is quite gorgeous!

Now 2 more hens have gone broody - they've been gossiping & they all want an egg
to hatch! Too bad they'll just have to watch.
tomorrow I shall give Beany the 3 eggs in the incubator, then I can turn off this
buzzy thing in my kitchen & leave it to her, good, I really didn't like the idea of the
chicks hatching inside a plastic box, it didn't feel right.
