Re: Miss Piggy's chicks

sadly the 4th chick didn't make it, it died having only made a small hole in the shell.
Misspiggy looked very relieved when I took it away & immediately took the others off
for a scratch around the coop. Infact she trashed their nest, filling the little bowls of
food & water with bedding! Then led the 3 chicks out into the run where she had a
quick dustbath - throwing dirt all over the babies, meanwhile I tidied her bedroom
before they all trooped back in and dived into her feathers for a rest.
Welcome to the world little chicks!

So far I'm thinking "Caramac" for the ginger one & "Cheesecake" for the yellow one,
unless anyone has better idea?

Darn! I put their food in the run this morning & was watching them playing when
I kept catching a movement in my corner vision. There it was again! a mouse poking
his head out from under their coop to eat the chick crumb!
I know they are around & expect they will come out at night & eat any spillages, but
I wasn't expecting to see them in broad daylight! Not much I can do about it really
I hope they don't pass diseases to the babies.
I've heard that mint is a deterrent to mice - I'll give that a try!

Yes I had heard that about mint and also strong spices like Cayenne mixed in with the feed, which apparently put mice off, and which hens are supposed not to mind - although I am not sure about the effect on teeny weenies like Miss Piggy's three babies.

Time goes fast for little chickies, the first tiny feather tips are showing already.
No more pics yet, I've just bought a replacement camera, I'll have a practise with it tomorrow.
Today I found Misspiggy wrecking her nest in the coop, she was bocking away while
scratching all the bedding out the door & everywhere, the babies were zipping about
pecking at the floor. I fetched my glasses and had a closer look at what they were
doing & saw there were lots of teeny-tiny larvae & little black fly things, when I
tried to catch one it hopped a bit like a flea. They were living in the dust under the
bedding and amongst the DE! Nearly all of them have now been eaten now, but I
better give her coop a good clean tomorrow. I wonder what they are?

Chickens are really quite )loo( when you think about it :-D

Perhaps they are the larvae of those tiny little flies you get living in plant compost (I have them all over the place at the minute, obviously they are liking the warmer weather)

The chickies are gorgeous but have you named the little grey one yet? You could call the little yellow one 'Souffle' (as in lemon souffle)

This little chick already has a comb - and big feet! Must be a boy, I might
call him Borage, its blue and edible.

Unfortunately we have an overdose of cute in the chicken run and I now have 4 other
broody hens all wanting their own chickies! (which aint going to happen)
This has led to a major shortage of nestboxes, I have just made a temporary one
from a wicker veg basket! But I think I was too late as Hobnob disappeared for a while
meaning she's fond somewhere in the garden to lay her egg today.
