Re: Miss Piggy's chicks

Just found out what the chickies are, Caramac is goldlaced, Borage is a blue, and
cheesecake is blue mottled. I've been told they should be show worthy but I'm
not sure I could do that, all that keeping them clean and shutting them in a cage
for ages while they're poked about with. I've never actually been to a chicken show,
I really must go to one just to see what they're really like.

Today Misspiggy & her chickies moved home, they're now in the broody coop & run
on the lawn, they get some sun but are mostly in shade. They had a lovely time
exploring the grass and lying in the sun today & it was much easier for me to sit and watch them there. Three quite different characters are appearing, Caramac likes to
sit in the sun and watch the world go by, Cheesecake is fast and a bit flighty and
the most timid of me, a girl I think, Borage is bold and curious & the first into
everything and the least afraid, got to be a boy.
I'd post some pics but my son has pinched my new camera!

I've had a play with the new camera.
Misspiggy & co just moved into the grass run, Tiny wants to be the nanny.
Image
I've now fenced off an area around the run so they have more space to wander.
I sat in there today feeding the chicks some scrambled egg while the others looked
on in interest (think they just wanted some scrambled egg)
Image
afterwards the babies were so full they had a long laze about

They are beautiful. I'd like to go to a chicken show, too, maybe this summer. Like you, I wouldn't want to go through all the faff of keeping them clean and they'd have to give up a certain amount of freedom in order not to get dirty, it must be great fun taking part, though.

The babies are growing & it was time for their next adventure, being taken round
the garden & meeting stepdad

When Smidge did this to Cheesecake he got a peck in the eye!
Misspiggy takes the chicks back to her run every so often for a rest, but woe betide
any hen that strolls in there, Misspiggy has become a lioness!
I am pretty convinced that Borage and Cheesecake are boys and Caramac is a
girl, shame, I was crossing fingers for at least 2 girls then I could keep one.

Watching them today I'm now convinced that Caramac is the only girl, the 2 boys
were sparring together and they keep wandering off on their own whereas Caramac
sticks closely to mum's side. She's going to be a gorgeous little hen, I'll expect to
rehome her with one of the boys as a pair, I wonder which one will be her favourite,
I think Borage will be the boss.

This morning little Caramac was showing off some gorgeous new feathers,
it's fascinating watching the fluff gradually taken over by proper chicken colours,
and it seems to happen so fast

I was thinking that myself Bridget's mum, they are lose in the garden with their
doting mum, running through shrubs, climbing trees, scratching in mud, sleeping
in the sun on the grass. I know letting them have this freedom is not without risk
but they're having such a wonderful chickhood! it's worth the risk. I just hope I can
find them some free range homes this summer.
Meanwhile.....more piccies!!
I heard some flapping about in the little weeping pear tree, peered in & saw a
little yellow bird !
Image
which turned out to be little Cheesecake!
Image
He obviously likes making use of those lovely new wings
Image
Dear little Borage he's not the prettiest chick
Image
but he's definitely the bravest!

Little miss Caramac grows more pretty every day
