Post by bean »

I run animal care at work. We have 3 ex battery chickens nursed back to health. Love them, their so funny. Picking up 7 more on Saturday, 4 for work, three for me to have at home. Never had chickens at home, the coups been painted, got everything I need. Looking forward to giving them a new life.

good luck with your new hens. How are the youngsters at the school reacting to the ones you have?

have a look at this thread, particularly the last post, re dogs.
Most people find they get on fine - with something between them.

Thank you only 2 days to go. The kids at school are good with the chickens and the other animals, don't like cleaning them out though! They are fab when it comes to maintenance or if I need any physical work done. Only students doing b Tec are allowed with animals or those I trust, their never unsupervised.

Hi, animals in general are good for all children ,and elderly .
Like cats on a lap , dogs for walking .
Next door nieghbour has a special child , she love s the dogs cats , chickens . Trouble being , I do not let children in my house /garden on their own or un accompanied for obvious reasons.
It is a shame as I am sure they would take a lot more interest in them .

Hi yes I agree. Unfortunately amongst my group of friends I'm the only one that has a love of animals, they like them but not interested like I am. But thats fine, I get that as long as people don't hurt them. I have two dogs, cat, parrot and tropical fish. My daughters left home so their good company, and my grandson loves visiting.

Hi , do not think you have been told/written about .
HOLIDAYS
If you decide to go away for a few days or more , have you a plan on how to look after the chickens.

Need to have a think as you do not want to spoil your time away by fear of the girls behind.
training the humans to respond to the girls and reading the signs is not quite as simple as one would think.

Hi I've not been on holiday for 7 years. But if I ever do my daughter will stay at home and look after animals, plus there is a local farm that looks after hens for people that go away.

Well the girls have settled in to their new home, alls quiet and have gone to bed. Lovely to watch them foraging on the grass for the first time. Just hope the others rescued have found a good home. Shocking condition.

Condition of hens .
I sometimes feel sorry for the farmers ,as when they do pass on their girls ,normally it is the time of moulting and end of the laying time.
If you had seen some of my girls when they have moulted and having a rough time ,you would say I am being cruel as well.
At least the farmer was prepared to supply for rescue . It could have just killed them and gone to a food chain.
Well done again .
