Yes thanks Helen, I didn't buy any seeds from the squash family because I don't use pumpkin etc very much but I do make soup sometimes with butternuts- can you look on the pkt Helen and see if it mentions any specific likes/dislikes or maybe you know from growing previously, as I said clay soil,with chicken run compost being dug in ?

Right - it is the Butternut squash 'Hunter' variety - bred for UK climate and stores well.

Sow indoors March - may, outdoors May. Harvest sept/oct

As for care, just says to water freely and feed reguarly.

I think they would be great for that bed as you would only have to repare the bits where they grow, and let them cover the rest (if you know what mean) and the clay will help with water.

Not that I really have a clue about squashes. {rofwl}

Think I might be starting to get the gardening bug at last this year.
Today I finished digging in the chook run woodchips to the bit of land that I am putting squash in - thanks Helen - I got the Hunter variety )t' .
Then I planted a rhubarb crown I bought the other day ( champagne) and as a matter of curiosity lifted the big flower pot in the hens run to see if there was any sign of life in the original crown and )c( 3 little shoots. I don't know if it will survive but I dug it up (the hens would have demolished it otherwise) and planted it in the raised bed near to the other crown so >fi< on that one.
Got Eck to drag the bag of compost into the kitchen so I could start sowing seeds ( can't use greenhouse as it is still a tip :oops: ) and have sown ; squash,coriander,courgette,cauliflower,marigold both african and french,lupin and sweet peas. Still need to get on with the cosmos, tomato and peppers , maybe tomorrow. So a couple of pics to be going on with , first the squash patch dug over and secondly the seeds getting a start in my little sitting room - they will be rotated as the bottom shelf won't get much light.
