using Coxoid

Post by bubbles108 »

I have a 3 year old chicken who i want to treat with Coxoid but have a number of questions.

The bottle I bought is for pigeons, is it ok to use for chickens?
I have just introduced 2 point of lay chickens who have been vaccinated. I was going to add Coxoid to the drinking water used by all 3 chickens is this ok.

Thanks

It is the pigeon one that is used with chickens. But I've read it's quite a strong
treatment and I believe it has a 28 day egg withdrawal period, are you sure your hens have cocci? what are the symptoms? You can have their poop tested either at your
vets or send away to a lab to confirm. Here's some I've heard of

http://www.westgatelabs.co.uk/shop/chic ... nt-kit.htm" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
I would presume vaccinated hens will have started life on medicated chick crumb to
protect them against cocci, I don't know how long this would protect them, I thought adult hens built a resistance to it - unless levels of it in the run get too high. If yours
do have this you will need to treat the run floor as well.

Must admit I don't know and am clutching at straws. I have tried de worming, cider vinegar and poultry zest. She seems fine in herself but her poo is not the right consistence and is on her rear feathers. I would be grateful for any assistance.

have you tried checking the poop guide?

If it doesn't help, perhaps you could take a photo and post it on here.
Is it definitely blood she's passed, not the pinky red gel-like stuff that's gut lining?
(and quite normal)

Coxoid is a very good product for most hen keepers to be able to get their hands on.

Coccidiosis was know years ago by the old hen keepers as 'lights' because hens lose a lot of weight the keel (breast) bone sticks out quite a lot with the skin sticking to the bone. The faeces from a hen suffering from coccidiosis has a unique smell to it - once you smell it you will always recognise it.

Pleased that your little chook is getting better )t'
