Re: I am fed up to the back teethI am thinking about investing in some of these:
http://www.onyabags.co.uk/shop.php?crn=208 Or maybe find out how much tulle is to buy, and run some up myself. Has anyone else ever used them?? Waiting to welcome Sunny Clucker to Northern Ireland!
Re: I am fed up to the back teethDon't know the current price of tulle but would definitely make your own Babycakes. Drawstring bags are so simple to make.
You could use leftover fabric, or end of roll bargains. The scapstores have a wonderful selection for next to nothing. Muslin would be good for fridge bags and is cheap. Take a rectangle of fabric. Roll over the top edge and hem it leaving a small access to the roll over at each end. Fold, and stitch the base and side together. Put a large safety pin onto the end of your string and insert into one end of top roll. Feed through the string using the safety pin as a "mole" untill it comes out the far end. remove pin, tidy up the ends of fabric. Put knot or large bead on ends of string. Turn bag right side out and it is done. Quand je serai vieille je vais vivre en France

Re: I am fed up to the back teethI have a crock pot thingy, that you can buy biodegradable bags for. I fill them up and then they go into the compost bin and eventually they break down. I think the reason they are not used as much as they could be is that they are more expensive to produce.
Sadly everything these days seems to be motivated by commercialism. I reuse carrier bags I get, when I take the dog out. I seems to collect just enough in the week to have enough. lorna I`m not a teacher for nothing, you know!! If I was clever, I`d be dangerous.
Re: I am fed up to the back teethOld net curtains would do the same thing - and you might be able to pick them up really cheaply.
We use them for all sorts of things (hubby really likes them for fishing for his insect nets ). I don't have net curtains but here when you buy a house there are basics that need to be left in the house as part of the chattels(curtains, cooker being the main ones) so in the last house I took down the nets (as they are not something that has to be left) and kept them for making odds and sods bags. They make good laundry bags for putting in the machine for delicate stuff too. My skills on the sewing machine are not great but I managed them ¸.•´¸.•*´¨) ¸.•*¨)✰

Don't get your knickers in a knot..it solves nothing ~ just makes you walk funny Re: I am fed up to the back teethThis is a huge topic in schools right now, in the subject of Design Tech.
Half of the new curriculum is now focused on "Sustainability". This focuses on how we can reduce, reuse, repair, refuse, recycle and rethink all sorts of products. The course was redesigned after consultation with students, who wanted to know all about these sort of issues. It shows just how important young people think it is to focus on trying to do their bit for the future of our planet. In textiles, the sort of projects Ilona does is so now! Manda, your re-use of net curtains is just the thing. In food tech, we look at issues such as how far our food has come, local and seasonal food, how to use leftovers, how to reduce food bills and energy useage, how to repair our bodies with the right food, fairtrade etc. Its heartening to realise that tips and ways our grandparents used as a matter of course have come back into fashion. Neutered pets are happy pets! Please spay or neuter your pets. There are thousands in rescue waiting for loving homes, and not enough people to take them on.
Re: I am fed up to the back teethI have an old net curtain stapled onto wood either end. Now it covers the pond when autumn comes and collects the leaves that fall into it.

If you can't be a good example........ you will just have to be a horrible warning
Re: I am fed up to the back teethNext year I'm going to start seriously saving seed from some of the veg I'm growing especially chillies but I'm going to try some others as well - where I don't want cross fertilisation with similar types, I'll be making "cages" with old net curtains to prevent accidental pollintion by insects
Re: I am fed up to the back teethsounds like a good use for old nets. i used to use old tights to hold fish tank gravel whilst i washed it through, they were also very useful for holding charges of activated carbon in tank filters.

Re: I am fed up to the back teethi didnt read all the posts cos there are lots so someone may have already suggested this :)
you can send things to your local recycling station, or reuse things like apple containers in your fridge so they dont roll around or get bruised (Y)
Re: I am fed up to the back teethI still rant and rave on this topic. How sad am I then?
welcome to the forum by the way. lorna I`m not a teacher for nothing, you know!! If I was clever, I`d be dangerous.
Re: I am fed up to the back teethI quite like cucumbers wrapped in plastic........ it saves using any clingfilm to wrap the remainder before putting back in fridge
however most cucumbers here are the other sort, with rough even spiky skin! and they have to be peeled. I only get the "condom" ones ( love that description whoever it was) on odd occasions, when they work out cheaper. I have stopped buying bin liners, for rubbish, just use all the free carrier bags. Here the bin gets emptied daily!! except sundays and bank holidays, by the local man in his little dumper truck! I love it when they do the odd special promotion with items in a re-useable container.with lid......maybe a few cents mor, but it saves having to buy any containers. Only drawback is the assorted odd shapes and sizes! |
