Oil Spills

Post by saint-spoon »

Researchers at the University in British Columbia have discovered that harlequin ducks in Alaska are still being exposed to oil released during the Exxon Valdez disaster in 1989. With the oil spill off the coast of America looking like it’s going to continue until August I can’t help but wonder how many generations will have to live with this ugly legacy? {cry}

One of the biggest disasters of all times I would say, and they dont seem to have much idea what to do about the latest one. They spend billions on drilling and extracting, then try and bung up a hole with mud when it all goes horribly wrong. Shocking state of affairs.

Seems to me that our intelligence of technological advancement will be the very thing which will destroy us in one way or the other.
We've had Nuclear disasters etc, but none yet on a scale which will absolutely teach us a lesson.

Trouble is that other nations blunders are inflicted on those who dont deserve it and often the rammifications manifest many years later on inoccent victims , both human and animal.

What annoys me to death is they keep saying on the news ' the worst oil spill in America's history'.
If they don't sort it quick it will be the World's history.

It makes me shudder to think of the damage to the environment. Seeing the poor pelicans covered in the stuff is just the tip of the iceberg. Traces of oil will be going round the world's oceans, carried by the currents, for years to come. {cry}

The whole thing is horrible. Cannot believe the company concerned have spent in excess of one billion dollars to try and solve this oil leak problem.

You cannot begin to imagine the damage this has done, not only the the flora and fauna. That photograph of that lovely pelican covered in the muck, is just too much for me to look at - its awful. {cry}

As much as I want all the birds and mammals to be safe and well my sympathies go out foremost to the 11 families who lost a loved one in the explosion.

As long as we keep drilling for oil there will be accidents like this. Anyone who drives a car or uses any oil based byproduct is guilty by association in some respects. Without the demand there would be no supply.

BP are carrying the can for this at the moment but the blame will be pushed down the line.

More here

There were 126 people working on the Deep Horizon rig at the time of the April 20 explosion that killed 11 workers and triggered the spill.

Of those, only eight were BP staff. Another 79 worked for Transocean – including those who died in the accident – and the rest were employed by Halliburton and other contractors.

While investigations into the cause of the blast continue, experts claim it is unlikely BP will be solely to blame as the majority owners of the oilfield who leased out the rig.

BP owns the rights to the leaking Gulf of Mexico oilfield and leased out the Deepwater Horizon rig and oil workers to Transocean, which in turn contracted Halliburton to cement the plug in the well one mile under the ocean’s surface.

When bosses from BP, Transocean and Halliburton were called to give testimony on Capitol Hill last month they all pointed fingers at one another.

BP blamed Transocean, who bit back at BP and at Halliburton.

Of course you are right - we should all be thinking of the people who have perished in the oil rig disaster.

I wonder how long this is all going to take to resolve, regarding the oil spill itself. {cry}
