I think we all know that all these probably won't alter a great deal. But the powers that be, must know that we don't agree with things like Whaling, seal culling and this one etc. etc.. Makes you feel less helpless by signing. Wendy http://www.busheyk9.co.uk

Re: Bushmeat tradeDone - doing anything is better than doing nothing
Re: Bushmeat tradeit is a big problem and will undoubtedly see the extinction of more than a few species if it is not stopped; sadly many of the areas involved are either torn by conflict and lawless by default or rife so with corruption that the law is impossible to uphold. In some areas bush meat is seen as a delicacy for the well off sectors of society which is why it commands a good price, too good to be ignored by the willing entrepreneur. Deforestation for charcoal production is another big problem as it is a multimillion dollar industry controlled by tribal warlords; there is unfortunately no silver lining for these issues at the moment.

Re: Bushmeat tradeIt is sad that endangered species are being hunted for food, we take much for granted in our world, fresh water, supermarkets, internet etc etc, yet in many parts of the world people still hunt to survive.

Re: Bushmeat tradeTrue there are some who rely on bushmeat as their only source of animal protein but there is also a commercial demand; where there is a demand there are those willing to profit from it no matter how illegal the practice may be.

Re: Bushmeat tradeIn some countries it is quite legal to hunt certain species for food (as it is here of course)
It is the perception of the animal that upsets us I think. We in the UK are used to eating certain animals as food, cows, sheep, chickens and pigs in the main. In France they eat horses, in Korea they eat dogs, the Chinese will eat pretty much anything. Hindu's regard the cow as sacred, I wonder what their take is on us Brits eating them. Moslems regard the pig as a filthy animal and would not contemplate eating one. I have stayed in hotels in Asia where for breakfast the sausages are made of chicken and the bacon is beef. Very difficult for an African hunter to let a meal go by because the spcies is endangered. Vir prudens non contra ventum mingit

Re: Bushmeat tradeAccording to a recent article I read, poaching has now overtaken habitat loss as the biggest direct threat to wildlife in Africa; rather disturbing IMO. Additionally a French scientific study has discovered that bushmeat hunting is destroying the balance of plant species within the forests by wiping out plants with larger seeds who are by default reliant on the larger animals for seed distribution. The lack of effective regeneration of large and medium sized plants has opened the way for the small scrub plants (which are in part controlled by larger animals) which take over and choke the remaining forest. More doom and gloom.
