How to live longer

Post by Meanqueen »

I am reading an interesting book, thought I would share a few snippets with you keeping in mind the copyright laws. It's about the connections between your emotions and your pyhsical health. Apparently having fun is one of the best ways to boost your immune system. This is a prescription for laughter and pleasure.

1. Get enough sleep, it helps fight viruses.
2. Socialising with friends and family boosts your spirits.
3. Have a good laugh, it decreases stress hormones.
4. Cultural activities, concerts, museums, increases antibodies.
5. Keep a diary, helps you see your problems as less stressful.
6. Get a massage, it reduces anxiety.
7. Learn to visualise, a relaxation technique.
8. Be an optimist, being positive can help your immune response.
9. Daily excercise can bolster your resistance to disease.

Sounds like a good recipe to me, this is my translation,

1. Get out of bed at lunchtime.
2. Go to the pub with your mates.
3. Tell a few jokes.
4. Go to a pop concert.
5. Post on the forum.
6. Have a good scrub in the bath with a loofah.
7. Close your eyes and think of George Clooney/ Kylie.
8. I will win the lottery.
9. Get up from the computer once an hour to make a cup of coffee.

I prefer your guidelines rather than the books!!

No 2 from the book I agree with about friends, but family less stressful? - I think not!

Sorry I read that as "keep a dairy" not a diary & thought this is getting expensive.

I'll take the 2nd list as the one to follow then )t'

Go folk dancing, you've got 2 & 9 covered, and 3 as well when trying to learn a new dance and it doesn't quite work out the way it should.
It must work, one of the clubs I go to has a lot of over 80s in, and one of our founder members made 98, until she was 92 she came every Monday and danced every dance (after that she had leg ulcers but still came to meet people and dance what she could). I also go to clubs which are younger, and ceilidhs which are younger still and have a following at Universities.

That's very inspiring, Mo.

My Uncle Stan is 84, a hairdresser all his life, now his customers come to him at home, they are also his friends. All the money he takes from this goes to Air Ambulance. He works in his garden, the last time I saw him he was moving paving slabs about, amazing!

Another golden oldie I met recently. I needed to have a medical for renewal of my HGV licence. Someone told me of a retired doctor who does this at his house, a lot cheaper than going to a surgery. I went along and went through the procedure and he signed the form. On leaving I asked him how old he was, because he looked pretty sprightly to me. He proudly said, 94. I asked him what his recipe was for a long life. He answered, 'Never smoke, and keep working.' I smiled, and as I left, I said, 'See you in four years then.'

It seems keeping active in mind and body is the answer. I plan on never giving up work completely, maybe doing a little part time job, and keeping busy with hobbies. There's so much more I want to do, I still have another adventure in me waiting to burst out !
