A useful bit of kit to have in the armoury, if all else fails.
Which appears to be the case in this instance.

Oh please chi chi don't even go there. These little hens have had enough cruelty in their lives without beak bits. I have heard of so many beaks being broken with these awful things.
Please let them settle, read all about introducing new hens at the top of the page and seperate if necessary to start with. But don't go down that road, please.

Have to say I had never heard of beak bits before tonight and I wish I hadnt ! yike*

I cant really imagine under what scenario I'd use these ?
How on earth do chickens manage to eat with these things on if it stops the mouth from closing ?
Really confused by this thread now........... sile}

YOU DON'T NEED TO USE THESE UNLESS EVERYTHING ELSE FAILS!...I have over 70 hens and I have never felt the need to use these things (you might guess I don't like them much).... You have only just picked your girls up ...no problems yet just settling in...

Andrew, have you tried giving the hens lots of things to do to keep them occupied? I had a similar problem but now with several perches, logs to peck at, carrots, cuttle fish, old CDs and cabbage ends strung up for them to peck at, they leave each other alone for the most part. We've also got some fresh bark chippings from our local country park and spread them over the run floor. They're full of worms and the hens spend all their waking time scratching for them. I've learned that you have to give them lots to do and enjoy because they get bored easily. They still have the odd peck at each other and the lowest in the flock is always a bit baldy around the bum area, but they are usually ok.
