What's the govt up to now

Post by Mo »

I had this email
Dear friends,

Have a look at this:http://www.38degrees.org.uk/dont-scrap-environment-laws

I’ve just signed a petition to stop the government from scrapping important laws that protect our climate and countryside. The government claims that these laws are 'red tape,' but in reality we need these laws to stop politicians and private companies from harming our environment.

When thousands of us signed the petition to Save our Forests, it worked. If as many of us as possible sign this petition, the government will have to listen.

Does anyone know any more about what is planned?

The website doesn't give any details, so how does one find out just what the Gov. are planning to scrap.

I don't think we can Mo. The new Government (then Opposition) opposed building houses around Ashford and destroying brown fields. One year on they're planning yet more Estates.

There are plans to build behind me within the next four years. Although I shall have probably moved by then I wrote to the Council saying how Swans nest on the riverbank there and it's a haven for wildlife..............twice no reply!

Seems it's Evironment versus Business and the latter usually wins.

And another campaign from 38degrees. They quote the Guardian who say that there is pressure to water down the climate change proposals.
Only to be expected I suppose, but we can at least sign the email to MPs and show that some of us care.

Another article from the Guardian:

http://www.guardian.co.uk/commentisfree ... nvironment

The reader's comments are fascinating as usual. There appears to be a weakening of support for renewables among the general public which I find both worrying and sad.

I know when we was in Ashford Richard and I was in the community forum we were fighting tooth and nail not to have houses built on a school ground. It was chucked out last year but I see its in jeapordy again. My daughter lives in Hunter Ave and the housing estate that has been built down there, they are like rabbit hutches. Problem being theres no work and nobodys buying them so the agencys buy them. OK, but when you have just bought a house and move in all happy and your next door to the dregs that the agencys put in these houses.

Hi Maggies,

I cycled a long circular route of Ashford the other day. I thought I'd take a scenic bit at the back of Great Chart, Singleton, then on to Chiesmans Green.

yike*

I was horrified, once a part of Englands green and pleasant land. Now......words fail me.....and there's more to come.
The now Government completely opposed Prescott's plans for the town. They've not only continued it, but added to it as well.
