Combi Boiler Help.

Post by Orfy »

Does any one know about the inside of combi boilers?

I have a leak and I think I've found the source.
Water side obviously, I wouldn't touch the gas.

It's coming from what I would describe has a water reseviour. It look a little like a steel hot water bottle. It seems to be leaking from the folded seal.

If some one can help I'll get some piccies.

Thanks. I'll put them up in a day or so. I've taken the outer cover off and thankfully the bit I think is leaking is at the front and easy to remove.

I believe it's called the EXPENSION VESSEL

Ok!, sounds like the expansion vessel (sorry previous statement was incorrect! ).
The expansion vessel is a "shock arrestor"..

Thanks for the help.

Mute point now, just priced it up and its £136 for the part alone!

It allows for expansion of water in the system due to change in ambient temperature. It's air on onside, water in the other, a rubber membrane inbetween and a shrader valve.

For that amount I'll leave it be and monitor it.

I could fit an external one that can be had for around £30.

We'll see.

Any chance you could apply some mastik/resin on the leak as a temporary repair?.
I get my spares from the link below, but I would guess that all parts suppliers will be of a similar price bracket!.

Possibly but it's presurissed so I'm not sure.

I've tried an independant retailer and the manufacurer and got the same price.
Even if it was a bit cheaper it's still too much for a none essential repair.

It looks like this.

I would assume because it is a expansion/pressure vessel, that for safety reasons a repair would not be recommended {warn} only a replacement!, but as you mentioned. putting on an external one makes more sense, cost wise as well!!.. )t'

As far as I know it's supposed to be filled with air. The idea is that it allows for the water to expand as the temperature rises so that the pressure doesn't increase too much.

I only know this because ours filled with water which meant that when the water in the radiators heated up, the pressure got so high that the pressure relief valve kicked in. Then when it cooled down again the pressure got so low that the boiler tripped out.
