Bargain and A Small Project

Post by Totally Scrambled »

Went out the other day and saw some nice kitchen chairs in a place that does house clearances. Popped in and had a look, there were four of them and in quite nice nick, just a bit of re-upholstering of the seats and a clean up needed.
They are barley twist, made of oak and all joints are sound. A bargain at £60 for all four.
Ali has the skills to replace the seats, strip them down, redo the webbing and re-upholster while my job will be to clean off the accumulated gunk and repolish the frames.

They're very pretty - they'll look lovely when they're all done.

Ali's removed the cushions from the seat bases and reckons the webbing and stuffing has never been replaced while the material covering has been replaced once. Even the frames that the seat covering is attached to are oak and the top side is beveled which is very unusual.
She reckons they are from the fifties at the latest, possibly older but either way they were built to last, made from good materials and very well constructed.

Aren't you tempted to leave the old varnish/wax as it is? Its got that lovely 'old' colour to it ...

Ooooh - next time you visit, would you have a look at my little bedroom chair for me? I think originally it had a caned seat, but it was sort of badly upholstered with loads of wadding, which is now falling out the bottom. }hairout{

I was looking at it thismorning when I woke up and was wondering about putting a ply seat on, then making it squashy. The only thing was that as I thought it through, I came across problems.

It is so pretty though.

Helen,
We are leaving them as wood, it would be sacrilage to paint them as the wood is so nice.
I'm sure Ali would have a look at your saggy bottom and offer her expert advice on how to rejuvenate it )t'
Willow,
We're just going to clean the worst of the dirt and grime off, not strip them back to bare wood. Then we'll repolish which should bring out the pattern of the grain once more.
