Oh Wise Peeps - Can this be true?

Post by Orfy »

Can this be true?

Serious question. I need to do some research.

Can anyone point me to further information?

Dont know about lite beer, but red wine reduces bad cholesterol and increases good cholsterol and overall has a beneficial effect on blood cholesterol levels and the 'stickiness' of the blood. However, it must be in moderation - no more than a glass or two per day (small glasses, not large, unless you want to increase chances of heart attack, liver disease and some cancers).

Interesting link. Sorry I can’t answer your question as I do not know your particular situation. It sounds good but I would consult your doctor/dietician before you rely on it.

That is 100% true. However, some substances can react with others and make things worse not better, so just because something contains no cholesterol doesnt mean you can use it with impunity as it could cause the cholesterol you do have to behave in a certain way, eg make it more 'sticky' so it coats your arteries better. That is why I am less sure about beer than I am about red wine.

You also have to take into account the calories wine and beer contain (hence the 'lite' I presume), as too many calories can lead to heart disease amongst other nasties too.

"Since light beer is not derived from an animal, its cholesterol content is low."
I wasn't aware that any beer was derived from an animal. +confused+

Treat with a pinch of salt or a light beer :-D

I was under the impression that hydrogenated vegetable fats counted cholesterol as well. I'd avoid the salt.

Yes, that is very true, but are there any hydrogenated veg fats or trans fats in lite beer? There are none in red wine.

There's no oils or fats in beer.
If I'm correct (Without looking it up) there are less calories in a beer than a snack bar.

The good news is I don't have to give it up then.
I don't usually drink more than a pint or two anyway.

A pint or two how often? There is a vast difference in a pint or two a week and a pint or two an hour yike*
