hydrangea not flowering

Post by bubbles108 »

I have a hydrangea which is refusing to flower.
There are loads of leaves and it looks healthy
Anyone got any ideas as to what I'm doing wrong?

Is it a new plant? Pot or flowerbed? What soil type do you have?

Hi

I bought it from a supermarket last year when it flowered really well. Repotted it this year and its grown really well except for the flowers.

I'm not sure what type it is

As it was in flower last year when you bought it. Nine times out of ten they are forced to flower for quick sale as nobody wants to buy plants without a flower on it. Its more than likely having a rest
You've already re-potted it and I would try giving it a good feed and don't prune it. They don't like it.

They tend to do better in ericaceous compost, positioned in part shade. Make sure you never let the soil dry out. They like moist soil.
Maggie is probably right. If it looks healthy, it'll probably flower again next year!

Thank you
I was begining to wonder if I was wasting my time.

Thompson and Morgan have a lovely new variety advertised and I was thinking of buying one. The pointers you've raised hopefully will mean it will be worth the cost.

Thanks again

Go for it! They are lovely plants! If you have a blue flowering one, it'll definately benefit from ericaceous compost!

I bought my very first ever hydrangea last year (from the garden centre) and I was going to leave it in a pot. However, it was not looking great by about May (mind you, the weather....) and so I put it in the flower bed - OMG, you should see it now. Stunning and full of blooms! :-D
