mould on unused paint

Post by Mo »

I've had a nearly full tin of paint for years. Matt emulsion
A couple of weeks ago I opened it and used half.
This morning I opened oit again and there were patches of mould growing on top.
Why?
Is it OK to use?

Probably because it's water based, if emulsion is stored for a long period of time the enzymes in the pigment start to break down in old paint, and can cause mould to form!.
Personally, I would get rid of it, take it to your local council recycle/waste site, they will have the facility to dispose of it properly )t' ..

What would happen if I used it, would it go mouldy on the wall. And what about the coat I did the other week, will that start growing mould?

Excellent - at least you know that if the paint on your wall goes mouldy, you can buy more mould from ebay to make the rest of the room match!
