A plant for planting at this time of year?A plant for planting at this time of year? One of my dearest friend's dad passed away last week and it's her birthday just after Christmas. I would really like to get her a plant for her garden which she would have in his memory but since I'm a rubbish gardener I've no idea if there's anything which would look pretty at this time of year
Any thoughts/ideas much appreciated. The talent for being happy is appreciating and liking what you have, instead of what you don't have

Re: A plant for planting at this time of year?Hi Ellie its obviously not the best time of year for flowering plants, there are one or two that have colour - Skimmia is a fairly hardy bush thats evergreen and has deep pink/red flowers (they are a bit shaped like buddleia) or why not look at evergreens - the name is misleading as they can be yellow/orangey or nearly blue and can be upright or horizontal.
It will be alright in the end , if its not alright, it isn't the end .

I really am rubbish when it comes to gardening, OH grows veg but not much else. This may be a stupid question (I'm known for them ) but would the plants suggested above be the kind she could keep inside until the spring and then plant out? Re: A plant for planting at this time of year? The Hellebore is hardy so plant straight outside, and they spread http://www.crocus.co.uk/plants/_/perenn ... ssid.2916/

Re: A plant for planting at this time of year?I was trying to think of Hellebore but it wouldn't come to mind last night. They self seed as well so in a couple years time plenty of little plants. Though mkine aren't actually in flower at the moment , usually late winter before mine start.
Did you mean a special couple Ellie or a couple with special needs It will be alright in the end , if its not alright, it isn't the end .
