I started lurking around here earlier last year before I got my 4 ex-batts in the May & June 2012 rehomings. My first two , Elsie (behaves like a 'regular' hen - if there is such a thing) and Florrie (now renamed Miss Houdini ), were larger than I expected and quite stroppy really looking back ! Although Elsie is the smaller of the two she was definitely the boss and has remained so after adding two more ex-batts, Carol (with the floppy comb) and AwwBless (such a sad tiny little thing but how feisty is she now - even with still only half her feathers!!). My son then 'added' to the flock with Big Girl (a blue Brahma but so shy she's bottom hen even though three times as big as the others !) and TeeTee (a black Silkie cross who is either in one of two states..broody or complaining !)
Unfortunately for my other half these little darlings have more or less taken over my life..but what a positive they are , especially when like this morning they have left me four lovely pressies in the nest box !! Four out of six ain't bad....especially when two don't lay

Well, quite an uneventful week this week, just the usual wet and dark conditions, although did seem a bit lighter at 3.30pm yesterday when the girls had a quick corn feast. I was put to shame by my 8 year old grandaughter, Bonnie, however when we went to lock the coop and for her to collect the eggs. We found 3 eggs which she collected with great care while I showed her how to count the chickens heads with my little lantern, I counted six, she locked the coop, then asked 'Nana, do you know there's a chicken under the coop ?' Naughty TeeTee , , had jumped out and hidden under the coop in the dark, so she got brought in as her punishment for a pic of her to show Sandy !!

My goodness she is gorgeous, I have only ever seen one black silkie before and she didn't have those lovely streaks
