Transformer

Post by p.penn »

yike* This is a bit of a blue post from me!!

I need a new transformer for my fibre optic christmas tree. Are there different voltages etc? I think I blew the last one up by plugging it onto the wrong tree. The tree went upber bright and then the transformer wouldn't work any more

Also, do they have different sized holes at the other end? :?

I need to find a new one urgently (well, before Dec 1st) +f+

Yes Helen the voltages and amps vary on them. The output will pe on the old one somwhere,normaly in tiny writing.
Something like 12v~750mA. )t'

and the end bits do come in different sizes. Shops such as the indian food electrical shop will sell universal adaptors as will our-goose and probably pestcos, sadsa and other electrical outlets.

Are you sure its the transformer that's dud & not the tree? I wonder if the tree would need a pretty catastrophic failure to knacker the transformer.

Sometimes there is a non-resettable thermal fuse embedded within transformers but something would need to overload the transformer for it to get hot enough to trip it.

Don't suppose you have a multimeter on hand?

Many transformers are sold with a set of 'ends' and you clip in the size that fits.

Ummm...slight problem here as I threw away the old transformer before Xmas )sh 77

What actually happened was that I always have a little one in my window at Xmas - had it donkey's years. Then during the year I was given a larger one too. I went to put the little one in the window and one of the transformer pins had snapped off (the third on - just seemed to be glued on :? ) So I rooted around and found a second transformer. Well it made the tree much brighter than usual for about 10 mins, then it stopped. I thought it had blown up the tree to start with, then when I found a third transformer which seemed to work okfor the little tree (and continued to do so all over xmas) I was pleased. I have tried that transformer in the bigger tree too and it works, but am not sure if it is the right voltage for the bigger tree.

That was a bit of a diatribe, wasn't it? {rofwl}

Better use a large hook then. As the name implies they are more than two metres long.
