Double glazing insulation question

Post by redd_angel55 »

We finally moved house and it's lovely here, BUT so much to repair/replace!
Flat roof in need of attention, fencing, boiler playing up, patio and back door due to be replaced ect ect ect, so there is not much cash left!
Our windows are double glazed, but the they are old and drafty.
Does anyone know the best way to make the windows draft proof?

Where are the draughts coming from?
Where the windows close/open or from round the sides of the frames?
If from the open/closing bits you could buy some stick on draught strips so that when the window closes it seals the gap.

Thanks for your reply Dom!
The draft is coming from the the gap between the windows and frame when they are closed. Currently has black rubber strips, but I suppose they've been compressed over time and are now useless!

Then,as a shortish term solution, you could use silicone bathroom sealant or something similar to fill the gaps. You'd need one of those gun thingies to squeeze it out of the tube too unless you could find some that is in a big toothpaste type tube.

Maybe I didn't decribe the problem properly! If I do that, I won't be able to open the windows anymore LOL
There is no draft between the frame and the wall, just from the window and frame gap if you see what I mean?

In that case it's back to the draught excluder type strips stuck to the frame where the windows close onto it.

Thank you for replying. This looks like it goes directly onto the glass, but we have double glazing. It's just the gaps where the wind is howling through!

Hi Jacob, the draft is coming from the gap where the window meets the frame. I think we need new rubber seals (and win the lottery!) :-D
