Amaryllis

Post by p.penn »

I was given an amaryllis for Christmas - I have never grown one before. honestly, it grew so fast that I thought it must be an Audrey!! {rofwl}

It is absolutely spectacular, and actually, the photo doesn't do it justice as it seems much fuller and lush in the flesh.

Do I just throw it away when it finishes?

Definitely NO When the flower is over cut it off with a downward slope. Water it well and then let it completely dry out. It sounds awful but it gives it a rest, Lay the pot on its side and leave it a couple of months in a light warm dry place. After a couple of months bring it back in and give it a good water and feed (tomato feed is good) It will start to sprout leaves. If they get to straggly cut them off and repeat the same procedure. Usually after that it will flower again. I've had 3 for about 8 years now and they bloom every year.

They are spectacular, aren't they?
I have a pure white one my sis gave me many years ago. It was "reduced to clear" when she bought it (!). It still flowers most years, and is on it's way up again now. :-D
It gets virtually no attention and still does it's thing.
