What is the best way to stop the lilac tree from seedling everywhere please?

Only thing I can think of is to de-head the flower stalks before they can set seed.
Unless the problem is suckers, in which case I haven't a clue.

I have that problem too - loads of branches growing a foot from the root }hairout{

As totally scrambled says if its not to big dead head it. Or if you have a lot of suckers just put a spade through them. One little tip and I learnt the hard way, don't cut it right back as it stops it from blooming the following year, well with me it was about 5 years as I cut it back really hard.

We take out the suckers with loppers. We do it to the pear tree too, which is grafted.

And we too chopped it back too far about 3 years ago - this year it has come back with a vengeance, it looks lovely but is HUGE :-D
