Plant identity?

Post by Knikitta »

A friend of mine and her young daughter have sown some mystery seeds. I was not lucky enough to see the seeds so I have no head start on identifying these plants.

Any ideas? My first thought is 'curcubit' of some sort.

It does look like a cucumber, but its quite early stages. Other choice could be melon, courgette, marrow or pumpkin.

Yep, all the squashes crossed my mind.

Will have to wait till it's a wee bit bigger I think.

No no, nothing to do with school.

She said the seed was small and brown like an apple pip... she thinks.

I would say a courgette if the seed was small and brown. All the others we've mentioned are usually quite big and white or cream.

Would agree a cucurbit but rather a cut leaf for the usual suspects.
Might watermelon be a possibility?

My guess is ornamental cabbage, too.

Some parks use white and pink cabbages in their bedding schemes. Can't say I like them much, personally.

Atriplex, commonly called Red Orache in the UK. Can be used like spinach.... apparently. :)
