Lovin' it...White wash.

Post by Orfy »

I've never used it before today and If found I love it.

Any on else used it?

I must admit it's an improved formulation but it's so nice to use. Much better (In most ways) than modern paint.

Pictures to follow. :)

Not a good day for photo's or white wash to dry!

This is about 1/4 of the area I did.

The good thing about it (apart from the clean up) Is that it looks like it's not freshly done.
Just Clean.

Well since then I've learnt a bit more.
I've been lime plastering and did internal walls in a lime based paint. It took me months but I love it.

I don't believe it - I came on here tonight specifically to ask a question about this!

Our house is approximately 100 years old, no cavity walls of course. After various failed attempts to insulate the inside walls of the sitting room (the other rooms are ok) we have given up on wallpaper or any form of lining the walls. We've decided to paint it with something and my husband was wondering about old-fashioned whitewash or lime wash. The problem is that as soon as the warm air caused by our living in the house hits the walls, we get condensation - so the damp is coming from the inside, not the outside. In our dreams we would like to protect the gable end of the house with fake Welsh slates (can't afford the real thing) but that is a long way off.

He asked me to see if I could get any advice from anybody who's tried it - so what do you all think? And where do we start?

Love the dog, by the way.

Thanks.

Double amazing. We, too, have an old house with no cavity wall insulation. A couple of the walls seem to be damp, and all sorts is being recommended by the experts who have visited. I'm prepared to believe most of what they're saying.

I love the look of whitewash/limewash. It would suit the more traditional living room in our house and the "living" part of the kitchen/diner. Definitely something to think about.
Bea; 19 hens (most of whom I intended to get); 6 bantams (which I never intended to have); old Benji dog and young Toby dog (who I definitely wanted). Three years into country living and loving it.

The lime paint is the same that they use on old buildings with damp walls, it allows the walls to breathe and the damp to come out. The worst thing you can do with an old wall is seal it with modern paints.

My friends is a restoration and conservation expert and his company manufacture a modern version of lime wash. Lime Earth Paints.

I'll message you his details.

It's good stuff because over years it becomes chemically part of the wall. (It basically reverts back to the limestone that it was made from.)

Stuart the will give you any advice you need. There is also lots of info on his website.
