don`t think the deaths heads will come out till the spring now, don`t really want to risk over wintering the atlas in case they die, so leaving them inside, should be a month or so before they come out >fi< , they might just over winter on their own though

their poo is really weird, it`s got ridges down the sides, tastes funny too {rofwl}

my only swallowtail hatched out the other day, the other swallowtail caterpillars died {cry} , they all went all mushy and waterlogged, the spurge moths did the same, the guy I got them from said he had the same problems with them, it`s because they were quite inbred so had problems, he`s going to get fresh stock next year from different places so that he can get a stronger blood line )t'

this is the one that hatched )t'

and these are the atlas moth cocoons, I`ve cut the silk purses open to check them, the silk was so strong there was no way I could rip them open, god knows how the moths manage to get out through them when they hatch >shrug<

Thats interesting, Ock re the in breeding, seems like that goes across all animals etc.

Will those that you have cut open be OK?

yeah, they should be fine, the silk is only there to protect them from the weather and animals, now that the silk has been cut it should make it easier for them to hatch out and they shouldn`t damage themselves, I hatched lunar moths a couple of years ago and I completely removed them from their silk, they were fine )t'

my little babies are starting to hatch, was thinking/hoping that my deathshead hawks would over winter, they had other ideas though {rofwl}

5 have hatched so far, one was all mangled up though and didn`t live, they are really squeaky too when you touch them {hug} , you can`t see from the pic`s but when they open their wings up they are a beautiful yellow underneath )t'

just fed them their first meal of honey, you have to hand feed them by holding them and using a cocktail stick to get their tongue out and dip it in the honey to get to fed, have to do this every other day, after 2 or 3 times they get the hang of it and know what to do, god who`s how they manage to feed in the wild without anyone to show them >dowhat< >dowhat<
