Cottage / Wildlife Garden - Any Ideas?

Post by Scrambled »

I'm planning a new section of garden and wonder if anyone can recommend any large shrubs or small trees which would be good for providing a structure and backdrop.

It's part of our front garden which at present is lawn but with a couple of large shrubs and trees right near the house. I want to turn it round so that we create a screen at the road end of things and so that I can make a little garden that we look into from the house.

We live in a very old cottage, and I have in mind a kind of cottage garden or wildlife garden theme. I don't want to plant a hedge, as such, because we are already surrounded by those and don't need any more to trim and maintain. Ideally I'd like as much evergreen as possible (but not firs of any kind) and have so far thought holly, robinia and maybe a tall cotoneaster.

Does anyone have any recommendations, perhaps from a similar project? There are a couple of points where I'd like plants which will be tall (around 8 - 10 feet) because there are two points where I need to block the view of the road if I can. By the way, our soil is clay, the area is very exposed and so the plants need to be pretty hardy (I wouldn't risk an evergreen buddleia). It's an open aspect, so no shading - but when the plants are in they will form a west facing backdrop for the rest of the garden.

Any suggestions gratefully received )t'

We have just planted a pampas grass in our front garden, to try and block people seeing right into our front room, which is a fair way from the front gate. It will be a while before it does the job we intend it for.

Just a word of warning - I have a viburnum (did have two ) but neither of them are/were evergreen and they are both different varieties.
