I made a cake and it was awful

Post by Mercedes »

Apart from baking bread all the time, plus soup, I am still trying out different cake recipes and have bought a few new books, mainly Mary Berry and a couple of The Great British Bake Off ones which of course are full of Mary Berry recipes too!

So yesterday I decided to make a Bakewell Slice and quite honestly it wasn't nice at all. I've sent OH to work with about a dozen pieces and binned the rest, although OH doesn't know I binned some of it as he would eat it just because he doesn't agree with throwing food away.

I'm not sure what I did wrong with the pastry but it turned out very insipid looking and I really felt it should have been baked blind first but the recipe didn't mention doing that. Then the sponge topping only had a basic sponge mixture with ½tsp of almond extract, which didn't add much flavour at all.

Won't be baking that one again :?

What a disappointment. You would hope by following the recipe it would turn out fine.
Don't blame you for not wanting to do it again.
When you bake a delicious one, I will test it for you, just drop it round {rofwl} {rofwl} {rofwl}

My next one is going to be a Marry Berry stem ginger traybake, just need to get a few more ingredients for it. I've got some of the things I have baked lately on here baking

I eat everything I make, whether it's nice or awful. Like your hubby, can't bear to throw food away. Perhaps you could have made some custard to pour over, or put it in the bottom of a trifle and set it in jelly. Even chucking it out for the hens, or if not suitable the garden birds would have had it.

We have a food chain, if we don't eat it, it goes to the dogs and lastly the hens if the dogs don't want it. So our food waste is nil )t'

Sorry to hear that Mercs.

You could give it a Charity where they're having a sponsored Cake fight maybe.

Just a suggestion.

Seems the chaps at OH's work loved the cake, honestly they must have no taste buds or been so hungry they didn't care what it tasted like. Even OH ate 4 slices of it >coc<
