Re: Julie's chicken keeping diary

I haven't posted on here for absolutely ages .... I lost Muriel ... I do love the ex bats but they seem to bloom for a short happy while and then just fade away. All the others are going strong and although I dont really need anymore chickens from an egg point of view I bought two more today. One is a Welsummer my first "posh" lady and the other a warren - I do love little brown chickens. So they are in the baby run next to the big run .. went to bed no bother and the others didn't scream at them as much as last time.

The others are all well - big fat speckledy hen (top lady) stopped laying in the Autumn and doesn't seem to be showing any signs of starting again but she's a lovely top hen and calmly keeps the others in order. Her mate the bluebell is stil laying very well. I've had them both two years (I think now) and they're doing really well. The white star that I got last year lays virtually everyday and the other day laid a triple yoker - it was absolutely massive - I dont know how she managed to lay such an enormous hen as she is only tiny. She keeps herself very much to herself and just goes her own sweet way - still a bit flighty but nowhere near as bad as she was when I first got her.

The chicken that has been a bit of a revelation is my blue egg laying hybrid at first she was so dopey and flighty - all she wanted to do was roost up in the trees every night and led me a merry dance. She's now turned into a real mummy's girl follows me everywhere - sits next to me in the garden whenever I'm out there. She's a real sweety and a good layer too!

I'll post some pictures of the newbies when I can find my camera!

And I shouldn't leave the other ladies out!

All doing well - some fisticuffs but not too bad - still keeping the new girls in a seperate run and house at the moment - there's no rush - just let them free range together at the moment.

Lovely Rita laid her first egg today ... she's been stooping down the last week so knew it was on the cards but she still looks a baby so was a bit surprised. Think she's my favourite chicken ever - she never stops talking and follows me everywhere - she's adorable :-D
