Got my bees at the weekend

Post by fabindia »

Been on a course, got a hive and picked up a nucleus of bees at the weekend. Not a 100% sure of what i am doing but they seem to have settled in well enough.

I guess the first challenge will be to get them through the first winter.

I am resisting the temptation to open the hive and take a look inside till the weekend when i need to check the queen is still there and laying well.

If nothing else it's an interesting learning curve.

Great news. OH got his a month ago and is fascinated with them, Being in Bulgaria and not speaking the language he hasn't had the benefit of a course, just the gentle bee man telling him quietly how everything works and that he's doing OK.....in Bulgarian. {rofwl}

Thank goodness for the internet, sign language and the bee man's daughter on the phone....in Canada!

Enjoy your bees, they are amazing.

How lovely!

It seems to be a good year for bees. Our neighbour on one side was given a 'bee house' as a birthday present 3 years ago and this is the first year anybody has set up home there. At the same time, a colony has appeared in the bird table (which has a little roof and an entry hole for bluetits) of the neighbour on the other side. So it seems like conditions are just right for yours to get established before the winter.
Our garden is full of them now, we have a lot of hardy geraniums and comfrey and they are full of bees all day long.
Funny how the hens seem to know that they have to avoid them, I suppose it's the yellow patches on their shoulders, or whatever bees have instead of shoulders.

Great news Michael .. looking forward to updates. )t'

We must have hives near us as our garden is always full of bees too. At the moment it is the Escallonia that's attracting the honey bees ..earlier it was the fruit trees and yet again they have done a fantastic job. The bumble bees are all over the broad beans and the cottage garden so they are getting well pollinated too. :-D

Your neighbours will be ever so grateful to you Michael. )t'

Bees, along with Hedgehogs, are in the top ten of endangered species in the UK.

So, you're doing a grand job.
