Insect id please

Post by p.penn »

A friend was telling me yesterday that he saw a 2inch long thin insect with almost a furry wasp/bee type body and small wings half way down its body, with a long protruding sucking type nose like a humming bird. It was dipping into his flowers.

Any ideas?

I'm betting it was a humming bird moth. My friend recently told me about these
I think he photographed one recently, I'll see if I can find it.

I saw my first one ever this year.
Was hoping it would come again but only spotted the once so far.
I had read that they have a regular 'patch' so if they've been once the chances are they'll come again.
Mine was attracted to Sage.

We had a bed of heather outside our kitchen window in one of my previous homes, and one came to it, but I only saw it once.

Apparently their numbers have increased by over 200% in the last few years.

Good news when so many creatures are decreasing in numbers.
