Crochet advice please

Post by p.penn »

Has anyone ever joined granny squares with sewing cotton? The reason I ask is because in the pattern I am using it says to join squares with wrong sides together, by back stitching. This gives a lovely ridge around the edge of each granny square, and neatly encloses the flower. This is as far as I have got.

The thing is, that if I use the colour of one square to join (like I usually do) I think the back stitching will show on the contrasting square? If you see what I mean. The only way I can see round it would be to join them with 'invisible' sewing thread, but not sure if that would work. Unless, of course, you can get see through wool? >shrug<

Then I have to choose the best way to actually make it into a cushion - there are to many different ways on the web, and I want it to look better than my 'Greek' one, which is crocheted both sides and loses it's shape all the time. }hairout{

Any suggestions very welcome!

You could use the yellow wool then the backstich would be part of the design....???

Unfortunately both sides of the back stitch would be visible and the 'loopy' side looks a mess I think. If it was more decorative stitch, it would be a brilliant idea Mo!

I am a big fan of joining by DCing them together with the ridge on the face of the blanket (work with both wrong sides together), I would either use white or to make a big contrast black, depends who it is for.....

Thanks Kate. I have seen that done and it does look nice. It wasn't quite what I had in mind for this, but may end up doing it!

If you do go that route it is neater to just pick one side of the stitch up, the two that touch as you hold the two pieces together. pick the bottom of the top v and the top of the bottom if that makes sense.... so the join is not too bulky. Hope this makes sense....

I'm sure it will make sense if I read it while doing it! Thanks Kate.

It probably won't as I am hopeless at explaining myself >shrug<
