Hostas are edible!

Post by Annemieke »

Hostas, apparently, are not just ornamentals. I have never been interested in them as I only care for what I can eat. But, having seen https://scottishforestgarden.wordpress. ... 07/hostas/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;, I now wonder when they come up? When can I start pestering my more ornamentally inclined neighbours for a taste? Are they out yet?

No they're not out yet, although I noticed a couple of buds coming up on one of mine, but I shouldn't imagine they'll be out for a while yet. Late spring/early summer and they die bcd in autumn. You may have to fight with the slugs and snails to get any though!

Thanks for the info!
I have heard about the slugs. I read the following, but obviously haven't tried it yet:

The main problem with their cultivation is that slugs are also partial to a hosta salad, though in my climate this is only a problem in late summer. I make a slug trap by breaking off a few leaves of the largest species and placing them around the hostas and other susceptible plants. Then I regularly collect the slugs that congregate underneath. I would'v thought that's just a slug starter course! Beer traps are supposed to be effective, as are crushed eggshells around the pot and ground as they are too sharp to crawl over. don't know if they are old wives tales!

If you keep your potted hosta in a large saucer that always has water in it, the slugs will be deterred. Make sure it stands away from other things or the slugs will get to the leaves that way. It has worked for me. )t'

Mine are in pots and do very well. I originally had them in the ground but they just got eaten.
