Miss Marple

Post by wendy »

Sammy will be going to his new home at Easter >fi< and I have been asked to take on a new little charge.

Image

This is Miss Marple, she is a collie x Greyhound.
She has a myriad of problems apparently. Very excitable and grabs your clothing. Guards her food and toys. Doesn't like you stroking down the sides of her body and has bitten. No pressure there then )grin2(

I can only see what I can do, poor little soul has been there three years and is the red zone area, with Sammy and where Tilly was.. So doesn't see a lot of people. Until Sammy goes I am just getting to know her from outside of the kennel. Giving lots of treats etc. They call her Marple. What a hard name I will call her Missy. So much softer,

Really pleased to hear about Sammy going to his forever home. )like(

Your latest project looks lovely, but do be careful if she has bitten, pretty please. {hug}

How old is she and why has she been in kennels for so long, bless her? Do you know any of her previous history?

She is about 4 and has been there about 3 years.
Don't know her history, other than the guarding and bitten. Hard to rehome a dog that has those types of problems.
I doubt I will make her rehomable, but at least safer with the staff.
But then I think I said I didn't think Sammy would be homed and here he is nearly home. But he has come on leaps and bounds. Though I say so myself. He really has done well.

Just got back from my first day with Missy.

Just decided to work on
the pulling and the going crazy,
getting hold of the lead and not letting go,
Biting your arm!
So I get her from the kennel and she gets hold of the lead. A quick Ah ah ! and she stopped.
Then she decided to do the zoomies on the lead, so I just walked in the opposite direction every time. She walked nicely after that.
She put her mouth on my arm [puppy mouthing really, just not been taught not to] OUCH !! she stopped that.

I walked her for an hour and three quarters and she walked beautifully.
So I went with trepidation, as they all say how awful she was.
I have no doubt it will happen again tomorrow, but she already has the message of what I want and what I don't.
A very sweet dog, who seems to have the measure of them all. I won't address the 'other' issues until we have worked together and she realises I am her special friend and I will take care of everything.

I can only say what others have already said, especially Manda. Just looking at her I just see a happy face, especially in the first photo.
If she has been there for 3yrs, I imagine that she hasn't had much quality attention or handling, especially if the other staff are nervous of her. Good luck Wendy, I'm sure you will keep us updated as how this little lady is going. )t'

No zoomies today with Missy. Only tried to bite the lead once.
She still gets a little excited when I sit down and tries to mouth me. But the third time of doing it, she didn't try to mouth me at all. She was a good girl.
I am pleased with her.

You are working your magic once again, Wendy. )app(

Three years is a long while to be in kennels, don't they get in dog behavourists/trainers?

Believe it or not Gwen. They have a resident behaviourist, that goes round to all the centre's.
One of the girls who work there said to me the other day ' do you get paid for this' I of course said I didn't, I am a volunteer. She said ' you should be, because you are a hundred times better than they are'. That made me feel good )grin2(
These dogs are saving my life, giving me something to do.
I am not lonely now, just alone.

Perhaps someone with some clout will suggest that you re-train the behavourist. What do you reckon?

Ha ha not getting involved I go in do my bit and the results speak for themselves.
two out of three rehomed, three months after I took each of them on. I am glad I have given them a future. Not certain about her, a multitude of problems.

Today again no zoomies, no lead biting, no mouthing. But she thought she would bring another out of her tool box ! Every time I sat down she jumped up to lick my face :? She is really testing the water. )grin2(
and to be honest before we start I ask if I can be in charge today and she says yes.....then tries something else on {rofwl}
She certainly is a challenge. But I am falling in love daily with her.
