We've Beaten The Birds This Year
We've Beaten The Birds This YearIt seems that this year the birds aren't interested in our cherries and for the first time we have some ripe ones to pick.
Just had a quick pick and filled a punnet wit 2 lbs of them and there are loads more to get but I'm going to wait until it cools down a bit. Apart from the ones that will be scoffed straight away I plan to freeze the rest so that I don't have to rush into making all things cherry straight away. Dom Ali Woks My World
Re: We've Beaten The Birds This YearAre they 'white' cherries?
I have a white and a black - never anything left on the black though can sometimes pick the white. So this year I picked the black (the lower ones) as soon as they turned yellow. And they are on a tray in the kitchen waiting to see if they ripen properly. But even then a lot had been pecked. Dance caller. http://mo-dance-caller.blogspot.co.uk/p/what-i-do.html

They're definitely red but I don't know what make and model they are. Dom Ali Woks My World
Re: We've Beaten The Birds This YearThey certainly are red. But my 'white' cherries sometimes go that colour.

Re: We've Beaten The Birds This YearI imagine that they ate very well as they look so good! I love that feeling of satisfaction I get when our fruit trees give us a good crop. You obviously feel the same.
Any idea yet what you will make with the ones now in the freezer? I am now a widow and live with my memories.
Re: We've Beaten The Birds This YearMo,
After consulting with Ali and her wokking me for being so stupid for not knowing about white and black cherries, I can now report that they are white cherries. June, At the moment our eldest has requested jam but I haven't got any further than that for ideas. Possibly a pie/pies/tart type things, so I'm open to suggestions. I'm starting at the top of the tree and working my way down and picked another couple of pounds yesterday afternoon but there are loads more up there. Our own fruit is nice but we are a bit spoiled here in our corner of the Garden of England as we are surrounded by fruit farms which produce pears, apples, cherries, plums, raspberries, strawberries etc. (The farm that supplies Wimbledon is just down the road and we don't have to pay anywhere near the price they charge at Wimbers) All the fruit is available really cheaply either at the farm or in just about every layby on the main roads. Re: We've Beaten The Birds This YearHow lucky are you! I do remember that when we used to visit my mum in Sidcup, fruit was always being sold from stall along the roads.
Kent has always been known as the garden of England. Great to know that the orchards are still there. Don't forget that cherries are delicious when bottled in a lovely thick syrup with a little drop of something added. Also a nice bottle of cherry brandy for a treat at Christmas. Re: We've Beaten The Birds This YearSo far I have managed to pick the top five feet of the tree and have about 7lbs of juicy cherries.
I may start on the jam tomorrow Dom Ali Woks My World
