New girls settling in well

Post by Susan59 »

After a couple of previous attempts our latest integration of new girls with old has been really successful. Patience seems to be the key. We have a separate pen and have kept the new girls segregated, but visible. After two weeks we have introduced them by opening the pen. There have been a few minor scuffles, and Edina our dominant hen seems to have deliberately picked upon the new baby. The other two newbies have been very protective of the baby. All in all it has been less traumatic than previous integrations.
It is about a year since we embarked upon keeping chickens and it has been an adventurous and informative journey. Some sad occasions when we lost Fleur and Minerva, some hairy moments with our broodys as they lost weight and looked scraggy and weak, but overall so much pleasure in watching our girls potter around the garden, each with their own personality. I can't imagine being without them now.
Thank you fellow chicken lovers for your words of advice and support which have been invaluable.
