Ashford Kent - Sat 20th.Dec - 17.1 degrees - should we worry

Post by Richard »

Some very bluntly deny global warming, they just say it's a natural cycle and there's no need to worry.

Some say, so what, it won't affect me, I'll be long gone when.....whatever happens.

Surely it's worrying ?

I've just been rereading Asimov The Gods Themselves. It's about an invention which provides free and pollutionless energy and is adopted worldwide.
Then a researcher decides it will cause the sun to explode (all very farfetched when you write it down).
The thing that struck me was that it was impossible to get a hearing for the theory until a new and better invention had been found in an alternative universe.
It was written in 1972, before global warming was more widely accepted but it has the feel of the climate change deniers arguments.

You do get the impression that nothing will be done. Other short term priorities (re-election, deficit reduction - no, don't start me on politics) in the way.

A few months ago I read that David Attenborough was joining a group of scientists
from round the world, trying to find energy that was cheaper to produce than
with fossil fuel. He said it's the only way the world will change. It's a ten year
project that needs world investment similar to a space project.
Good luck to them!! (on a side note, depending on what is produced it may change the
balance of power in the world)
