Socks!!

Post by p.penn »

Well, I am trying something absolutely new to me now, sock making, and I know it sounds a bit sad, but I am SOOoooo excited!! )c(

I am joining in with Winwick Mum's Sockalong and can't wait for my sock wool to arrive )c( )c( )c(

It was a photo of a drawer full of hand made socks that did it for me! Beautiful multi coloured socks of gorgeousness!!!

To be honest Jem, my knitting skills are somewhat dodgy!! I hope there's not too much counting as I'm not great at concentrating! The thing that has inspired me most of all is the comments. Everyone seems so enthusiastic and helpful. :-D

Reminds me of when I was a student. There was a scheme where we visited a pensioner in the Potteries (not sure what good we thought that did).
I was at Keele for 4 years and 2 of us visited the same lady (together at first, then when we were busier with exams we took turns)
She was a beautiful knitter. My friend supplied her with wool to knit socks for her father.
But over that time.....
The last creation which I had kept for a while* had a toe at both ends and several mini heels.
Hope yours works out better.

* My sister claimed it to use as a visual aid in a children's sermon, to illustrate the need for a pattern in our lives

Something that I have recently thought will use up various wools that I have. I haven't knitted socks for years but you have now made up my mind to do it. )t'

That's great June! There's a really good pic by pic tutorial on her website if you need a refresher!!

I am hoping my wool will arrive in a day or two so I can get going!

This is my progress so far! I'm afraid you are going to get loads of updates on this as it's a huge challenge for me and I am way, way too excited!

Knitting isn't really my thing, but after a very rocky start (and two more!) I am now on the easy bit. I say easy, but I am finding it hard using such small needles (2.5mm) as I am used to jumbo ones! I seem to knit and knit for hours and make 1cm of fabric {rofwl} I literally spent about 9 hours on these yesterday, but I am finding using the sock yarn absolutely fascinating, and cant wait to see them. I am hoping they will fit, but they may be a little big. If they are, they will be bedsocks!

Yes, have to say that I am! Never ever thought I would make (or have any interest in making) socks, but it goes to show that we never know what is round the corner to amuse ad delight us! :-D

I still have to do the tricky toe decrease, which is known as wrestling the hedgehog! {rofwl} {hog} and the last grafting row called Kitchener stitch, which apparently is a nightmare {rofwl} So watch this space!

Thanks so much Jem!! I can't wait to start the second one! My daughter now has my circular needle as she wants to try, so I must wait for my needles to arrive in the post! :-D
