One hen left, help please...

Post by debs123 »

Hi,
I have been looking after exbatts for the past 7 years. I was down to 2 hens yesterday, Margo and Daphne but had to have Margo put to sleep as she went down hill rapidly, which means I only have Daphne left. I don't want to get more hens at the moment but I am so conscious of the fact that hens need company. I know Daphne has a problem as she has a dirty bottom, which usually seems to be an indicator that all is not well. Otherwise she is her usual self and eating well. I feel bad for her being on her own but would that be better than her having to start afresh somewhere new? Surely there must be other people in a similar situation and how do I find them? Lots of questions, probably impossible to answer, just desperate to do right by Daphne....

If she has a dirty bottom is it fair to mix her with other hens?
A) might pass something on
B) stress might make things worse.

Perhaps you didn't see my post before yours. I am in the same boat. I would definitely not re-home, especially with loads of others. I didn't get the response I was looking for so am going to see how things go. My Bertha is a character so I am hoping that along with her cheekiness and the fact I am around most of the time she will be OK.

We ended up with one hen, and didn't want to get more. Ruby never really mixed with the others, and was a quiet little thing, she seemed quite happy on her own.

A neighbour of mine has come to the rescue and is more than happy to take Daphne and I can visit on a regular basis which makes me feel so much better. Thank you to everyone who replied and offered help. You are lovely people for taking the time and trouble.

Very best wishes

Thanks Spreckly. At least if she doesn't settle, she can come straight back home! :-D
