Had my lovely old boy pts yesterday...

Post by Dee »

Yesterday was the most awful day ,I had to say goodbye to Homer ...Ive had him since he was 10 weeks old , he was a rescue puppy that had not had a good start ...he was 17 years this September...
He has been struggling with standing up lately but he coped, but yesterday he took a turn for the worse , the vet said he may have bounced back a little but in the end the decision was down to me so I had him pts I cuddled him and he went very peacefully....I feel so bad this morning ...I know I did the the right thing in my heart but coming down this morning and the corner in the lounge where he slept was empty was just to much ....
I do know as time goes on it will get easier ...Ive been here with another 17 rescue dog I had before but at the moment I just feel dreadful

Aww so sad to read this.
You had really looked after him so well in these last final months.
He is no longer old and suffering. No comfort I know

I'm so sorry, Dee. You obviously loved Homer very much and it must be like losing a limb, but having him pts was the last and kindest thing you could do for him.

We had two cats that we'd had from kittens and nursed them through various health problems over the years before we lost them both within weeks of each other. It was horrible and so very quiet, and I completely understand how you feel.

Right from day 1 of our loss, every time we felt sad we'd also think of a happy or funny memory of them, and for me that helped enormously.

Rest in peace, dear Homer. I had to send my boy off in August. Looking at the empty space where his bed was, was worse than the actual deed. The pain has eased a bit now, but it will never go away. Take comfort in the fact Homer had a good life. {hug}

I feel so much for you at having to have your boy pts. When you have a pet for such a long time it is like losing a member of the immediate family. For 17yrs he had been dependent on you for all his needs and in return had given you unconditional love and companionship. I know it's not the same but he will always be in your heart. {hug} {hug} We had our Smudgy for 18yrs and I still think of him every day.
I am now a widow and live with my memories.

It is never easy after being there for all his life, good times and bad times but especially at the end it reveals a lot about you and the bond you had with Homer. The good and warm memories will come back to stay once the pain has eased. Not that this will help right now............

Take care and best wishes to you.

Hi Dee

Huge apologies for missing your post up to now.

There are not many things worse than saying goodbye to any pet.

Take care

Thank you for all your kind words and thoughts..
Its been just over a week now and I can actually go more than a couple of hours without bursting into tears !
People have been so kind ..a friend took me to lunch last Friday and then to the stables where she works to have lots of horse/ pony cuddles along with the farm dogs .....it was a lovely afternoon....
I collected Homers ashes this morning and I have him sitting along side me !.....its not the same as having that cheeky furry boy wandering around but its lovely to have him here in the warm with me ..
Once again thank you all
Love Dee
