Anyone for 'own pace' fun-walking?

Post by Mo »

Ilona has set a 1,000 mile challenge but that is not for everyone.
So to give ourselves a bit of incentive how about setting our own targets for the year, and reporting on this thread how we are doing.
If it's mileage I expect the dogwalkers will have a head start.

I'll start with a target of 500 miles walking. Though that won't count the miles I cover pottering around house, field & garden and dancing - must add another 300 miles / year on the dance floor.

I too would like to join in Mo, but at present I am a non starter with my knee and back. Even 500 miles would be too much.

It doesn't have to be 500. My idea was, set your own target. And report on progress from time to time.
Maybe 2017 (any mileage already done would count, though I haven't - except round Tescos!).
What's your target Mrs. B?

Well I have already walked for an hour each morning with my dogs and 2 hours most days with the NAWT dogs. So I am on my way.

Haven't a clue how many miles that would be. But if I can keep the hours up I am happy.

I think that puts you well over the 1,000. Unless most of it is standing and making the dogs run round you. I thought the dog walkers would clock up most.
A brisk walk is 3 mph or more, stroll maybe 2mph.

Morning, think I will put my target at 350, If I do more it will be whoopee but think 350 for me is doable (famous last words {rofwl} ). Will be starting Saturday.

Good idea Mo, anything to get people out walking is a good thing. Doesn't have to be a lot of miles, a few will do. I have 59 bloggy readers on my list, some of them have said they are a tad overweight and have dodgy knees, and won't be doing the full Monty. That's fine by me. The main aim is to take control, get off the chair and do a little exercise, no matter how gentle it is.

If anyone lives in an area where they can step outside their front door and walk, may I suggest you go to Bikehike and work out a one or two mile route which they can do as often as they like. I do a three mile route almost daily around my village.

Good luck, and keep reporting in with your progress.

Did my first walk this morning, not very far at all, but at least I did it. So hopefully taking it steady it will be onwards and upwards.

Great idea Mo, not everyone has the health and fitness ability / capability levels to match what is more or less 20 miles 'walking' a week.
That equates to nearly three miles a day - extra to shopping and generally walking up and down the garden etc.

I think we all know what we can achieve in a sensible and responsible way.

I walk 20 miles a week bird and nature watching, it's not continuous, but it's walking, it's outdoors and most of all...

it's not only about the fitness of the body, it's about the fitness of the brain as well.

Vive la difference, whatever turns you on and you feel happy with.

I'll claim 1 mile today, I parked further from where I was going and had a brisk walk (& back). Probably double that strolling round the shops in our lunch break.

I get to know what mileage I'm walking using Google Maps 'measure distance'.

If you don't know it - right click your starting point on the map, click measure distance in opening little window, then left click where you've been at certain points.
Just keep going until the end.

This was my 4.5 mile walk today (2hrs 45mins at birding pace)...

Bing Maps do Ordnance Survey View which is handy, especially if you have an up to date Mobile Phone.

)like( Thanks Richard, never knew you could do this, we have just sat and measured out our normal walks and my running tracks. Handy little tool.
