Roses: What are your favourites?

Post by Minxy »

Hello,

In the absence of some colour outside, I was just looking through some photos of my garden last year. What is your favourite rose and why? Photographs please!

My favourite has to be 'Gertrude Jekyll'. It gets covered in beautiful pink roses which have the most glorious scent that wafts. Another is 'Malvern Hills'. I have this trained along one fence (with two others) which produces a lovely yellow rose that turns cream as it ages. So there is always a two-tone effect. It is also very vigorous, taking no time to spread out. Here are a couple of photographs that I took last Summer of these two. :)

As a child I thought Peace was lovely.
There is a good strong pink rose, Queen Elizabeth or is it Elizabeth of Glamis. Ah just googled, E of G is orangy pink. Both nice.
And an interesting Orange one Whisky Mac.
And a really deep, dark velvelty red (??name??)
And the ramblers like Albertine.
So many to chose form.

The only one I'm not keen on is Blue Moon.

I love Old Glory, which climbs up our trellis and onto the arch each year. It has one small bud on it at the moment. My mil had Albertine, which was beautiful.

Last autumn OH dug the rose bed up, and put the roses elsewhere, they are all showing small pink shoots.

Black Baccara is a really dark velvety one. Maybe it is that one? Or Red Velvet?

Same! I don't like Blue Moon either. :)

I love flowers for their fragrance. My favourite being the old Fragrant Cloud which is one of the reds and for a climber Albertine which is a pale apricot or peach, never sure how to define. Sorry I don't have photos.

I have a beautiful yellow rose called ' Tom Bell' I think it is an old rose. Not a new variety, as it has the most beautiful fragrance.
I am not particularly a rose person. But this one is stunning

I love roses- fragrant cloud is gorgeous. Mind you, there are so many lovely ones. When I worked at the garden centre, we were rose specialists, and I used to adore the roses.

I have a blue moon one called 'twice upon a a blue moon'. The blooms are lovely, but it's not a strong bush. I also love ballerina, which is the only non scented one I would consider. To me, fragrance is everything.

Hope so, as I couldn't resist and have bought two to frame the shed! This will result in the usual conversation.

Husband: Are they new?
Me: No, they've been there ages.
Husband: Really?
Me: Yes.
Husband: Oh.

It's not age Wendy, it's hard to keep up with the names as the horticulturalists keep re-categorising and re-naming a lot of them. ;)

Helen, that sounds like an idyllic job to me! The scent at the nursery must have been quite something. :)

There are a lot of roses I like. I made a Danish Royal family rose garden. You will find all Royals have a rose named after them. We have now moved onto Royal Castles, of which most have them have roses named after them.
