1950s retro style clothes

Post by p.penn »

At the moment I am busy making myself a summer wardrobe of 1950s retro style clothes! Here are my makes so far!

This was my first attempt. It has little boats all over it and I have worn it a lot already. I made it too big and had to take it in, also I cut 2" off the length, which I regret as it alters the vintage style somewhat.

This is dress no 2, made a size smaller. Again, a bit big (in the bodice), but I am completely thrilled with this one, and wore it out on my birthday last week.

And finally (well so far!) are 2 pieces of a 4 piece outfit - a matching sarong and bolero. I still have the bustier (eeeek) and shorts to make in the same fabric. Really pleased with the two bits I have made, but quite nervous about making the bustier as it is really fitted and boned!

Very colourful.
And clever, I've given up on all sewing except replacing elastic.

I have a couple of pj bottoms that need new elastic! I like mended things when they are done, but really dislike mending them!

Helen you ae such a creative lady. Love all the garments, especiall the blue dress with the poodles on it. Of course you are so slender that I imagine you can wear anything.
Do you buy your fabric on line? I can never find any tha I really love.

Thanks! June, I usually buy from Fabricland, both the actual store and online, sometimes eBay but that tends to be pricier. I do like seeing the material first if I can.

I've been making the shorts today - absolutely everything went wrong! I put in my first ever invisible zip, but did it wrong so had to unpicknit. Then, when I had done it again, I did it up, undidid it and the slider fell off the end of the zip! So you tubed how to mend it, and off I went again. Then, had almost finished and decided to tidy the seams with my overlocker, and I accidentally caught the material in it and cut two v shaped holes in both sides of the front }hairout{

I have wonderwebbed it, but need to redo it. My shorts are now on the naughty step, I will decide their fate tomorrow {rofwl}

I think it was just one of those days - I even managed to forget my dinner under the grill and it caught fire. Had to go shopping for more {rofwl}

Like you Helen I like to see what I am buying but can longer get to shops. Back won't let me walk farr.

I know exactly how frustrated you must have felt having so many things go wrong. When it does happen to me, instead of putting it away fo another day
I am determined. It won't beat me, but it does.

Fingers crossed for today. {hug}
