As luck would have it, yesterday was a mostly sunny day - bit of a breeze though. BBQ went swimmingly. The girls met lots of new friends. I'm exhausted and a little green around the gills today :?

Hamble and Matilda out of their nests and in the garden a couple of times today and had dust baths this morning. Florence had some extra time in the garden with me after the other two retired to the nest boxes.

I'm going away for a couple of days this weekend so my neighbour will be on chicken duty. Actually I mean neighbours. One likes to escape her kids for a little while and sit in the tranquillity of my garden with a glass of wine watching the chickens and feeds the cats, while the other does any necessary chicken handling - she is a vet nurse so I'm very lucky. Since two are broody and need lifting out of the coop a couple of times a day, having a vet nurse on hand is great. She came round last night for instructions. I go away Frid to Sun. It would be nice if at least Hamble decided she wasn't broody any more before then. Not because she's a hassle but because it has been 8 (9?) weeks now and I would love to see her enjoying her freedom again.

One thing - I think her comb and wattles are getting a little redder. They were pinkish for the past few weeks as she is broody and not laying. Could the red returning be an indication that her broodiness is coming to an end? Anyone experienced this?

Photo above is Hamble. I put her on the cushion when I lifted her off the nest. She happily sat there for 5 mins until I lifted her onto the ground and gave her some food.

Not sure about the change in comb colour, you might be right though it does make sense. Perhaps try taking her off her nest more often this week & distract her with some mealworms or a patch of digging or something, with some encouragement she might be ready to give up.

A warm sunny day today with no breeze. Haven't seen a day like this in ages. I was working at home this afternoon so the girls got out into the garden at lunchtime as well as morning and evening. They all had dust baths and a forage. The broodies stayed out for half an hour each time then scooted back to the nests.

She'll have to get out of her broody phase first though I assume?
